THE DISCOVERY OF WHITESCHIST IN THE TAIHU-SUSONG AREA, ANHUI, AND ITS GEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

    • Early in the 1970’s schist made up of an association of tale+kyanite was named whiteschist by Schreyer (1973, 1974, 1977), who pointed out that the occurrence of whiteschist can be regarded as an indicator of high-pressure metamorphism. At present, whiteschist has been discovered only in a few areas of Asia and Africa, whereas in China there has been no report about its discovery. Recently the authors have found it during their work in the Taihu-Susong area, Anhui. Whiteschist is considered as one kind of high-pressure metamorphic rocks and a typical sign of intracontinental plate breakup-collision zone This discovery is of inportant significance to the study of the theory of plate tectoincs, mineralogy and petrology and the distribution of mineral resources related to high-pressure metamorphism.
