NEW PROGRESS IN THE STUDY OF THE JIAODONG BLOCK

    • Main progress in the study of the Jiaodong block is as follows. 1.Upper Ordovician to Silurian strata deposited in the Pyongyang area of Korea in the Sino-Korean platform can be only discovered in the upper part of the Middle Ordovician Majiagou Group in China. 2.Jiaodong and Liaodong do not belong to the same block;the Jiaodong block extends eastward to be connected with the Kyonggi block in the central part of the Korean Peninsula. 3.The Penglai Group should be divided into two parts:the part with the strata of Penglaige and the Miaodao Islands as the type localities of the Penglai Group belongs to the Sinian;while the other part in the Qixia area is another sedimentary sequence with different ages, lithofacies and tectonic environments. 4.Brachiopod,crinoidal stem and plant fossils discovered in the“Penglai Group”in the Qixia area demonstrate that it is the western extension of the Rimjin Group of Korea, being Middle Devonian-Early Carboniferous in age.So it has been proposed that it should be called the Yannan Group. 5.The Upper Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation has been discovered in the Zhucheng area, which shows that the Permo-Carboniferous hidden coal fields may be expected to occuI below the Mesozoic of the Jiaolai depression. 6.Strong faulting and magmatism that took place in the Jiaodong block during the Indosinian-Yanshanian movement complicated the block greatly.
