Abstract
Study of sediments and faults in basins where the cities of Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Xiamen lie shows that the events such as initial deposition, depositional hiatuses and Holocene transgression in basins from Zhangzhou northeastward and southwestward are sequential deposition events that took place successively with time and that the Zhangzhou basin and various Quaternary basins north of it are southwest-tilted dustpan-shaped basins. According to the above-mentioned characteristics, the paper presents a model of successive crustal uplift and extension from Zhangzhou toward the northeast and southwest since the Quaternary and analyzes the contact relationships and interaction between the Philippine Sea plate and Eurasian plate. The authors propose a view that the action of the Philippine Sea plate was the main dynamic force of Quaternary tectonic movement in this area and that the Bashi structure is the trigger structure for the crustal movement in the area.
