Geohazards and their prevention in resettlement areas of emigrants from the reservoir region of the Three Gorges project

    • The emigrants of the Yangtze River Three Gorges project have a total population of 1.2mil-lion.In the resettlement areas of the emi grants the geological conditions are complex, the geological envi-ronment has a very limited volume and the relations between land and men are strained,so resettlement work is difficult. This paper summarizes the geological work in the emigrant resettlement areas of the Three Gorges project as the complexity of the geological conditions ,operation of geological work by stages, limitation of geological understanding and protracted nature of geological problems and preliminarily discusses the content and mode of operation of the geohazard monitoring and warning project in the Three Gorges reservoir region. The geohazard monitoring and warning project in the Three Gorges reservoir re-gion will be undertaken in light of the principle of "central leadership, division of responsibilities among provinces and counties as a basis",on the basis of integrating the mass monitoring and prevention system with professional technological system, with geological environmental monitoring stations at three levels(national, provincial and county)as a backing and by using the modernized computer network technology and means of mass monitoring and mass prevention. The geohazard masses dominated by landslides will be monitored by groups and by different levels. The project will be implemented in four stages. Finally a sug-gestion is advanced about the geohazard prevention and control in the resettlement areas of the Three Gorges project.
