Determination of the Upper Triassic Shanhujing Formation in the Huishishan area on the northern margin of the Alxa Block: Evidence from detrital zircon U−Pb ages and plant fossils

    • Objective To clarify the actual geological age and stratigraphic assignment of part of the strata originally referred to the Lower Permian Shuangbaotang Formation in the Huishishan area and further improve the stratigraphic understanding of this region..
Methods Based on the newly discovered plant fossil Neocalamites sp. in the study area, combined with detrital zircon U–Pb dating results (236.8±2.1 Ma), an integrated method of biostratigraphy and zircon geochronology was applied in this research.
Results These strata are fluvial deposits of the Late Triassic, correlative with the Upper Triassic Shanhujing Formation in the Beishan area, and should be separated from the Lower Permian Shuangbaotang Formation.
Conclusions This fossil−bearing terrestrial clastic succession should be assigned to the Shanhujing Formation of Late Triassic age.
