The article introduces the basic concept and analytical technique for chemical speciation and discusses the BCR and Tessier sequential extraction processes applied widely in the chemical speciation of heavy metals in sediments and soils and their difference. Moreover,it also deals with applications of the sequential extraction process in geochemistry,environmental science and agricultural science and the present state of development of relevant reference materials in China.
