Abstract: This paper introduces the derivation and basic concept of the non Smith stratigraphy and the present development in its research. Considering that recently some people have renamed this kind of stratigraphy the “abnormal lithostratigraphy”, in light of the new results of 1∶250 000 regional geological survey in selected areas and study of mapping methods conducted by the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources in eight provinces and autonomous regions during the Ninth Firfth Year Plan period, the paper deals with the progress in the study of non Smith stratigraphy as well as the relation of“non Smith stratigraphy” with “tectono stratigraphy” and “abnormal lithostratigraphy”.
