Abstract:
In the vicinity of Jixian of Tianjin Municipality, Pleistocene strata are well developed, andabundant manmmal fossils and fossil remains of the human species were discovered. According tothe data of measured sections the strata are divided in ascending order into two formations: (1) theMiddle Pleistocene Xianlingzi Formatin, 5.9-6.6m thick is represented by speleothem composedof angular fragment -bearing sandy clay with tufa and "ash layers", yielding Dzcerohinus cf.Kirchbergensis, Megaloceros Pachvosteus, Macaca robustus, Sus lydekkeri etc.; (2) the UpperPleistocene Guanshancun Formation, more than 16 m thick is marked by surficial deposits, Con-sisting of sandy clay with lenticular sand and gravel layers, yielding Coelodonta antiquitatis, Equ-us przewalskyi, Paleoloxodon naumanni, Sus scrofa, Bbson sp., Ovis nahoor, Lipus tolai, L. eu-ropaeus etc. The mammal fossil assemblages contained in the above-mentioned formations can be correlat-ed with the Middle and Late Pleistocene faunas of Zhoukoudian of Beijing and Salaus of InnerMongolia.
