Abstract:
The 1:2,000,000 Tectonic Map of Xinjiang and its explanatory notes were completed in 1987 under the guidance of the theory of polycyclic geosyncline and platform advanced by Prof. Huang Jiqing. On the basis of a systematic summarization and study of the data obtained through more than 30 years of regional surveys and scientific researches and other relevant data, the tectonic units and cycles have been distinguished and discussed. In this paper the authors present their views on 5 out of the several major tectonic problems: (1) the nature of the Altay fold system and the assignment of the Ertix compression belt; (2) the Tianshan fold system; (3) the Beishan fault-fold belt; (4) the southern boundary of the Tarim platform and the western Kunlun fold system;(5) the relation of the Tarim platform with the North China and Yangtze platforms.
